AEO & MITA
What is AEO and who is it for?
Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) is recognition by Indonesian Customs that a company meets supply-chain security and compliance standards. Operator types include manufacturers, exporters, importers, customs brokers (PPJK), carriers, and others such as consolidators, TPS and bonded-zone companies. It is governed by MoF Regulation 137 of 2023.
How long does AEO certification take?
The current national average is around eight months. Regulated stages run from filing through the panel decision; your own preparation varies most, and the biggest variable after it is how many remediation recommendations you receive and how quickly you close them. We state the timeline we believe to be accurate — including when it is longer than you hoped.
Do you guarantee that we will be certified?
No — and be wary of any consultant who does. Recognition as an AEO or MITA is a decision of the Directorate General of Customs and Excise. We do not charge success fees on outcomes that rest with the authority.
What is the difference between AEO and MITA?
Both are forms of trusted-trader recognition granted by Indonesian Customs. Both reduce inspection frequency and open a direct channel to the authority, and both require an internal control system that survives validation. We support both, including monitoring and maintenance — AEO recognition runs for five years and MITA is subject to periodic review.
What happens after we receive the certificate?
The work continues. A company that treats certification as a project rather than a system tends to lose the status at the first evaluation. We help you keep all thirteen criteria satisfied through periodic monitoring, internal audit and cross-functional refresher training.
Working with SGS
How much does it cost?
Scope and fees are quoted after a diagnostic, because quoting beforehand would require assumptions about your condition that we are not willing to make. AEO packages carry a fixed fee confirmed in your written proposal and paid against milestones; other work is usually structured as a monthly retainer against measurable milestones. At the end of any phase you may continue, stop or change scope with no penalty for stopping.
What do you need from us to start?
To begin, only an introductory session with the relevant managers — no data access needed. For the diagnostic we need limited access to procedures, audit reports, service-provider contracts and your active tariff-heading list.
Will you replace our customs team?
No. We work alongside your customs, logistics and finance teams; process ownership stays with you. Every deliverable is designed to be operated by your own people.
Is our information kept confidential?
Yes. Customs data, audit reports, internal procedures and commercial terms are confidential and not disclosed to third parties. If you need a specific non-disclosure agreement, we sign it before the diagnostic begins.
Do you name your clients?
Not without their consent. We state the number and sectors of the companies we have advised, and arrange a reference conversation only after the client concerned agrees.
Can our overseas management read your proposals?
Yes. We prepare proposals in English together with Indonesian, Chinese or Japanese, which suits groups whose management sits outside Indonesia.
Customs audit & tax
What is a Health Check?
A self-assessment of how far your customs processes conform to prevailing regulation, carried out before Customs arrives — typically 3–5 weeks. A finding costs far less when you report it than when an auditor discovers it.
We are already under customs audit. Can you still help?
Yes. We support the audit end to end — file preparation, responses to findings and resolution — and make sure facilities such as KITE, corporate guarantee and bonded zones are used to your full advantage.
Why do you advise on customs and tax together?
Customs and tax exposure usually share a root cause — a valuation or classification decision that reaches both the declaration and the tax return. Treating them as one discipline avoids positions that are correct on one side yet create exposure on the other.
Start with a conversation, not a contract
A half-day introductory session needs no data access: we explain the requirements that apply to you and listen to where you are. Only if it makes sense do we move to a diagnostic — and a proposal only after that.
